Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1892. Boards. Very Good. VI, [2], 295, [1] pages. 8vo. Half leather over marbled boards. Minor wear and scuffing to the leather extremities, front joint just starting at top. Bright and clean internally. Boards. 'This discovery and its demonstration led directly to radio communications, television and radar.' This volume collects and reprints papers on electrical waves first published between 1887-1890 in Annalen der Physik und Chemie. Includes explanatory notes and Hertz's 31 page introduction. Hertz produced experimental proof of Faraday and Maxwell's hypothesis that 'electrical waves can be projected through space...' starting in 1887. 'By inducing the waves to produce an electric spark at a distance, with no apparent connexion between the oscillator and the spark gap, and by moving the sparking apparatus so that the length of the spark varied, [Hertz] proved beyond question the passage of electric waves through space...J. J. Thomson described the results as… Read More

Description:
1892. Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1892. 8vo. Contemporary half cloth. VI, (2), 295, (1) pp. Upper part of joints neatly repaired, otherwise a clean and fresh copy. First edition of Hertz' seminal book on electromagnetic waves, which laid the foundation of radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony. While investigating Maxwell's conception of light as an electromagnetic phenomenon, Hertz exposed that waves of electricity could both be transmitted and received through space. This had profound consequences and led, amongst other things, to Marconi's perfection of wireless telegraphy. "His [Hertz'] discovery of the properties of reflection, refraction, and polarization in electricity, with this wave theory of electrical motion, laid the foundation of radiotelegraphy and radiotelephony." (Milestones of Science, p 47.)"Experimental proof by Hertz of the Faraday-Maxwell hypothesis that electrical waves can be projected through space was begun in 1887, eight years after Maxwell's death. The two main… Read More
