Richard Bentley and Son, 1885. Original cover, a dark brown/red half-leather hardback, with a hubbed backstrip and gold lettering. The cover is in poor condition, with scuffing to the corners and the more exposed areas of the backstrip. The cover is beginning to detach from the pageblock at the bottom of the book, but the binding otherwise remains intact throughout. The endpapers are marbled, and the leaves within the book are slightly browned with age towards the edges of the pageblock. The text is in fair condition, with no annotations but slight staining to the margins of several pages. Pages 271-274 have been reinforced with additional paper. This book has the top-edge gilt.This book has hardback covers. Ex-library, With usual stamps and markings, In poor condition, suitable as a reading copy. No dust jacket. Brown cloth boards with gilt title to spine and gilt illustration to front cover. Heavy wear to hinges, spine ends, and corners. Hinges are starting. Occasional smudge marks to interior, mostly in margins, but clean overall. A good reading copy. Nice full page illustrations with tissue guards. A few loose pages. 350 pages. LITANTH/011320.

The endpapers bear the bookplate of Cecilia Codrington. There is some foxing to some of the plates, this has affected adjacent pages; there is some light edge foxing throughout.

Slightly cocked, edges lightly rubbed, patterned endpapers, contents clean and the binding is tight. With thirty-three steel engraved illustrations, each with tissue guard. A nice clean copy.

This is a selection of 33 stories, by various authors, from 'Bentley's Miscellany' magazine. Each story is mostly humourous in nature and illustrated by a Cruikshank illustration 'printed from the original etchings on steel'. There is some offsetting of the engravings to the text, but generally the engravings themselves are in vg condition (save for the spotting around the engravings, as noted). The binding has been recently, and professionally, restored. Notwithstanding, the boards still show wear to edges and some light soiling. Very small name stamp on front pastedown. Foredges a bit foxed; else in good plus condition. Digital photos available upon request. 'With thirty-three illustrations printed from the original etchings on steel'. All plates present as called for.

They were first issued in monthly parts in yellow paper wrappers. One Cruikshank illustration for each of the 33 stories. COHN 69. Bookplate, small ding to bottom back cover, slight nicks backstrip head and foot, interior contents pristine.

The spine features five raised bands and simple gilt embellishments. The top edge is gilt-trimmed. Very good condition! Only the barest rubbing at the corners. The tips of the free endpapers are tanned. Light foxing in the margins. Tiny closed tear on the plate facing page 287. Otherwise, text unmarked and binding secure. This is the first reissue with 33 illustrations by George Cruikshank from Bentley's MISCELLANY 1837-43 (see Cohn 69).
