He is the author of several works on Quaker pedagogy, as well as an autobiography. He was president of the Maryland Agricultural College for one month, serving on the condition that he received no salary and that slave labor was not employed. He assisted in developing the curriculum, but was forced to step down due to illness shortly after taking his post. The Young Friend's Manual serves as a guide to the basic tenets of Quakerism, and was published regularly from 1868 through the early 20th century.
