About This Item
THE MEMORIAL EDITION (1903). First Limited Edition of only 1000 copies of which this is number 702. In 20 volumes, complete. Internal content near fine to fine and complete. Bindings very good plus; all in publisher's original green cloth with labeled plates on the spine and bright gilt top stain. Mild wear, toning and wear to some spine labels. Overall, a wonderful set of this famous and rare compilation.
Each volume has two title pages and the second title pages each have a frontispiece. Edited by Andrew A Lipscomb and Albert Ellery Bergh. This scarce Lipscomb-Bergh edition has three different imprints, including the Memorial Edition (1903-4), Library Edition (1903-4), and the Definitive Edition (1905, 1907). However, these imprints are not known to differ from each other in content. There are original essays in each volume, by various authors including Thomas Jefferson Coolidge and William Jennings Bryan, and examining topics such as 'Jefferson's Contribution to a Free Press,' and 'Jefferson as a Geographer.' The set also contains Jefferson's autobiography, notes on Virginia, parliamentary manual, official papers, messages and addresses and other writings, official and private including all of the original manuscripts, deposited in the Department of State and published in 1853 by order of the Joint Committee of Congress.
