Austin: University of Texas Press, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. VERY GOOD. 1 of 8 vols., limited to 500 copies. Edited by Amelia Williams and Eugene C. Barker. 546pp. Original wine cloth bindings stamped gilt titles to upper board and spines inside double gilt rules. No names, no writing.
BASIC 96 Re: The full set "...indispensable reference tool for study of Southwestern and U.S. history, it contains all the letters, addresses, messages, speeches and other writings of Houston from all sources available at the time." Contains over 2,500 entries & 10,000 footnotes the editing of which took six years." This odd volume iii and the following odd volume iv contain some of the author's most intersting work. They cover his entire career: service in the U.S. Army and as Indian agent, as Congressman, as Governor of Tennessee, in the Texas Revolution, in the Texas Republic, as U.S. Senator, an as Governor of Texas. The papers appear chronologicaly, but snce acquistion and editing of the papers spred over a period of six years, many new Houston itmes were found as work progressed. These newly found materials were inserted at the beginning of each subsequent volume.
