Additional items laid in include a prospectus for the book, autograph text of two brief speeches Kittleson prepared to introduce Parker to audiences at the Minneapolis Public Library and the Skylight Club, a flyer for an exhibition of the Bell Library's manuscripts, an Associates' membership flyer, and a newspaper review of the book. The book discusses 15-century Portuguese trade in Africa; the role of bankers in the beginnings of European expansion; the tobacco trade; Europe's intrusion into trade in the Indian Ocean; the Canadian fur trade; Dutch and Swedish trading companies in America; 17th century sea law and commerce; the 1688 Siamese revolution; a failed Scottish colony; John Law and the Mississippi Company; the study of nature; indigo production and use; the impeachment trial of Warren Hastings, Governor-General of the East India Company; and the struggle to end the slave trade; as illustrated by manuscripts and books in the Bell Library's collection..
