Front panel of dw/dj with a horizontal, superficial score without penetration to the board beneath, some minimal indent impressions to rear panel but again, without any penetration. Top+fore-edges clean without foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, appears unread, other than my own collation.Publisher's bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, original plain dark green cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip,and clean (inscrptns excepted) plain pale green endpapers. UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj, 1st edn,vii-xpp+1-244pp [paginated] includes contents list/table with blank reverse, author's Preface, author's short Introduction includes Pts I-III with Notes,4pp Bibliography +Catalogues,Notes on the 181 b/w plates,Notes on the 60 colour plates,Appendices I+II,a Chronology and Buildings and Monuments by Robert Adam respectively,Appendix II a double-paged numerated b/w map with 4pp Key to same, and an Index.Plus [unpaginated] half-title,an explanation to the reproduced b/w illustration overleaf and its reverse,a title page,Contents list/table with blank reverse, individual separator pages for the Introduction, and Notes on the Plates (b/w+colour). Visually the exterior appearance is still exceptional, and even particularly internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 45-year-old age. It is only the minimal exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading for the dw/dj. Despite them,it] really is still an exceptional, exemplary copy overall, for its cleanliness and brightness. Robert Adam, unquestionably Scotland's most famous architect and one of the most celebrated of British architects, produced work that was in he vanguard of a general European reaction against the Baroque and Rococo. Some architects joining this movement towards a "purer" architecture offered solutions different in spirit to those adopted by Adam, some were content to produce variations on the 'Adam style',but it is to the interior designs of Adam himself - not to the work of these others, though they did much that was creditable - that we must look to find one of the finest expressions of eighteenth-century artistic achievemnet.Robert Adam, for all the criticism leveled at him by rivals, was pre-eminent in his day, evolving an assured and inventive version of the Neo-Classical that earned him an international - and lasting - reputation. This book,a visual survey of much of Adam's work, provides ample material for a critical appraisal of the development of Adam as architect and designer. The Plates, providing the only comprehensive coverage of his work available since Arthur Bolton's two-volume study of 1922,are prefaced by a short introduction and are fully supplemented by notes. Many of the photographs by A. F. Kersting have been secially taken for this book. The colour and monochrome illustrations are divided into three main sections: a small group of portraits of Robert and his family; reproductions of drawings made by him,or under his direction, both on his Italian tour and for the later commissions; general views and details of most of the completed and extant works, ranging from grand conceptions such as the south front of Kedleston, and the richly decorated interiors at Syon and Osterley,to the minute detailing of such objects as door furnishings, mirrors, tables, chimneypieces, chairs, silverware, and carpets. Ephemera includes a handwritten letter from the father to one of the daughters returning the book for reference use by one of the 1978's original gift donor daughter's daughter, who's now doing her A-levels.The retun dated Feb,'22.
