Toronto: The Musson Book Company Ltd., 1904. First Canadian Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 7 1/2" X 5 1/4. Published April, 1904. Story set in early 20th century in Vermont. Tissue protected frontis: "The stranger, looking back, saw the child still standing motionless beneath the butternut tree." 311 pp. plus advertisements for other Little, Brown & Co. books. Book carries gilt text on spine, black on front. Front panel has 2" square blindstamped image of a facial profile and a snake set in decorative square of evergreen cones over a Latin motto. Top edge dyed, extremities rubbed and scuffed, book is very tight and square, fon inscribed with black ink and a very fine nib, no notations. A very rare, first Canadian edition.
