Hartford: S.S. Scranton & Co., 1866. The role of women during the Nineteenth Century in art, literature, and war, is still a bit of a secret history that needs to be expanded. Here are 43 chapters noting exemplars from the just-concluded Civil War, including "Loyal Southern Women." This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Green cloth binding, ruled and decorated on the front cover, with the title and a garland in gilt; the theme is repeated on the spine. Clean text; 596 pages, illustrated with steel engravings; two frontis portraits with tissue guard (an idealized prayerful figure titled "Before the Battle," and "Mrs Fanny Ricketts"). The text is bright and clean; pages a bit stiff but still quite readable. Mildly bumped, and with wear at the head and foot of the spine Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket.
