About This Item
London : Trubner and Co., 1857. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed. 7.5" by 5". None. A first edition of this novel by Charles Reade. Charles Reade (8 June 1814 11 April 1884) was an English novelist and dramatist, best known for The Cloister and the Hearth. No half titles required for this work. White Lies started as a translation of Auguste Maquet's play Le Château de Grantier. After managers declined the manuscript, Reade adapted the story, weaving it into a novel which was serialised in The London Journal and published in three volumes the same year. He produced an adaptation of this on stage as The Double Marriage in 1867. Reade's novels were popular, and he was among England's highest-paid novelists. Complete in three volumes. In red buckram bindings. Externally smart, with just some light bumpings and the remains of labels to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Institutional ink stamps to title page. Pages are bright and mainly clean, with just the odd spot. Very Good Indeed
