About This Item

New York, NY: Grosset & Dunlap. Very Good- in Very Good- dust jacket. 1924. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good- condition and has a Very Good- dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have bumping, rubbing, small spine tears and some beginning fraying. The top edge of the front book cover has a bump with wrinkling. The text pages are generally clean and bright. There is foxing to all three edges of the text block. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front pastdown page. The dust jacket has edge wear, wrinkling, edge tears, nicks and several chips missing, along with ground-in dirt, spots of foxing and toning. The front flap joint of the dust jacket has mostly cracked, and is hanging on by about two inches of the bottom edge. This is the first in the Westy Martin Boy Scout Series. "Fitzhugh’s Scouting based books were very popular with children and adults. His characters became so real to his readers that it was not uncommon for Percy to receive fan mail addressed to the characters themselves. Fitzhugh's contribution to the growth and popularity of the Scouting movement can never be measured, but it is widely held that many thousands of boys joined the Scouts because of his writings. His "Pee-wee Harris" character is still being featured in a comic strip in Boys' Life, the official magazine of the Boy Scouts of America, almost seventy years after Fitzhugh's death. In the 1930s, as the popularity of Fitzhugh’s Scouting stories began to wane, he began writing the Hal Keen Mystery Series (10 titles) under the pseudonym Hugh Lloyd, also published by Grosset & Dunlap. The Hal Keen books were followed by another mystery series - Skippy Dare - (3 titles- G&D). Neither of these series achieved the popularity of his earlier Boy Scout work." (from Wikipedia) .
