A very interesting illustrated work on the history, architecture, and significance of Westminster Abbey, a beautiful and important Gothic church in the centre of London. It has witnessed numerous royal occasions, such as weddings, funerals, and coronations. Written by William Loftie, author of numerous texts on British history and buildings. The first edition of this work. Containing twelve illustrated plates and numerous of in-text vignettes, collated and complete. Illustrated by noted English illustrator and artist, Herbert Railton.A signed presentation copy by Herbert Railton, containing an ink inscription to the title page, dated 1889. All the plates are also signed in pencil by Railton. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart, with some light shelf wear and bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Signed by the illustrator to the title page, and signed in pencil by the illustrator to each plate. Internally, hinges are stained and binding is slightly tender in places. Pages contain the odd handling mark or spot, but are generally bright and clean. Very Good
