About This Item

New York: Viking Press, 1965. First printing. 78 pp., 9.25 x 7.75 inches. Cloth in illustrated dust-jacket. A very fine copy, a trifle dusty on the top edge, with the very slight toning of pages present in virtually all copies, in a sparkling, near fine jacket that has trivial touches of wear at the corners, minuscule chips at the top of the spine, and a couple of mild creases along the edges.

Levitt's first book, a classic collection of more than fifty of her New York City street photographs, mostly of children and their games and chalk drawings, shot in the 1940s and printed beautifully in gravure, with an essay by James Agee, written in the late 1940s when the book was first planned, but left unpublished at his death in 1955. Cited in all major reference guides to photobooks, including “The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century” by Andrew Roth, “The Photobook: A History” by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, and “The Open Book” by Andrew Roth.
