About This Item

The promotional bands feature three stills from the movie. Tolstoy's 'War and Peace' was first issued in Everyman's Library in 1911 in the anonymous translation of 1886; in 1932 the translation was checked throughout, passages which had been omitted were restored and certain defects of style corrected. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Everyman's Library, vols., 525, 526, 527; Hoppe, p.375; Seymour pp.270-1.

Synopsis

War and Peace, a Russian novel by Leo Tolstoy, is considered one of the world's greatest works of fiction. It is regarded, along with Anna Karenina (1873–1877), as his finest literary achievement. Epic in scale, War and Peace delineates in graphic detail events leading up to Napoleon's invasion of Russia, and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society, as seen through the eyes of five Russian aristocratic families.
