Set in the eighth century AD, a Norseman flees his homeland after challenging the god Odin's right to a human sacrifice. He travels to Constantinople to protect the Empress Irene from her son Constantine VL and other enemies of the Eastern Roman Empire. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. Illustrated by Arthur Cadwgan Michael, a British painter and illustrator. In the original orange cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. Age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
