About This Item

New York: Columbia University Press, 1951. Book. Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardcover, green cloth in pale yellow non price-clipped dust-jacket. 387 pages. Translated from the Danish by Evie Allison Allen. Introduction by Gay Wilson Allen. Includes Notes, Bibliography and an Index. First edition, first printing thus. Previous owner's name on front free end-paper. Sporadic underlining to text with occasional brief marginalia. A sound, tight copy of this "objective" literary biography which rejects the often panegyric tendencies of many critics and "demonstrates that Whitman, far from being unique as a poet and mystic, was a type long known to world literature...." A good copy in a worn but good dust-jacket. .
