About This Item
Boston:: Marshall Jones Company,, (1925). Hardcover first edition -. Very good in blue lettering (lettering rubbed off on spine, rubbing to front cover). First edition. About as offensive as a stereotypical book can be - from the forward which starts "The ways and folk-lore of our old fashioned colored people have always appealed immensely to me." and goes on to describe the "new negro" as having "progressed in many ways because of his remarkable imitative ability rather than initiative, he has utterly lost his former lovable qualities and picturesqueness." Even the stories are tainted by this attitude, from the title story which begins with an elderly Black man reassuring his little great great granddaughter of their family status because of who they belonged to. Ironically this was published in the same year as Alain Locke's landmark anthology "The New Negro." In addition to the title story, this includes Another Marriage of Convenience, An Elizabethan Revival, and The End of the Feud. Illustrated with drawings by the author's husband, Frederic J. Cotton, M.D. xi, 117 pp.
