About This Item
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1821. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 10.5" by 8". None. The first edition of Robert Southey's poem attacking the modern poets of his day, most especially targetting Lord Byron. The first edition of this work. Bound without the half-title and publisher's adverts. This poem was written by Southey as an attack on Lord Byron and his fellow modern poets. Southey calls the poets the 'Satanic School', as they had overwhelming pride, and audacious impiety which offended Southey. Southey's poem was written on the death of King George III, depicting George entering heaven. Byron replied to Southey with another satirical poem, in which he depicts a dispute in heaven over George's soul. Robert Southey was a Romantic poet, and one of the Lake Poets alongside Wordsworth and Coleridge. He was the Poet Laureate for thirty years, and supposedly coined the term 'zombie'. Armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of Edward Strutt the 1st Baron Belper, a Liberal Party politician and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Some rubbing to the boards and spine. A little fading to the spine. Lacks spine labels. Minor bumping to the extremities. A few marks to the boards. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with some spots. Lacks half-title. Very Good
