About This Item

Family photograph album documenting the missions established by Robert Shields & Family, mostly in East Africa, 1921-1933.

Approximately 375 photos, various sizes [2x3" to 6x8"] and condition. Mounted in tattered family album; many photos faded. Best to follow this link to all the photos in situ:

Laid in is a hand-colored poster/drawing: "Those People are Dying of Sin in Africa" SIZE

Reverend Robert Shields, his wife Louise Shields, and members of their family were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. They first went to Africa in the 1880s and 1890s as part of Bishop William Taylor's self-supporting missions. They worked as missionaries in Angola until 1936, and their children and grandchildren remained in Angola and Zimbabwe. These photographs, dating from the 1921-33, portray the lives of missionaries in Africa through portraits and snapshots of the Shields family, photographs of schoolchildren, tribal dignitaries, mission buildings, and various scenes of daily African life and landscapes.

Some of the photographs are dated and captioned; most appear to be in chronological order within location:

About Armadillo & Dicker Books & Ephemera

80 Years of Selling Things People Could Easily Live Without -- but now Online only.*****CONDITION: We are conservative graders. If we say FINE you can count on it. If there are any minor defects [e.g. minor shelf-wear] they will be noted. VERY GOOD means there is light shelf or surface-wear, possibly some light age-toning, maybe a prior owner's inked name inside -- but no significant defects. GOOD means we wish we had a better copy too, but still in collectable condition. Any significant defects will be noted. FAIR usually means the interior is good or better but the covers are heavily worn. POOR means both the interior and the covers are damaged. Again, significant defects will be noted.
