Buffalo: Baker, Jones, Hausauer, Inc,, 1938. First edition. Portfolio of loose color woodcuts. complete with title bifolium bearing the text and two smaller woodcuts in color plus all five full page color woodcut, each with a title leaf preceding it. Housed in the original printed black paper portfolio with cover lettering. A very good copy.This is one of the rare signed sets; all five large prints bears Ruzicka's distinctive signature in pencil below the image.Rudolph Ruzicka was a Czech-born American wood engraver, etcher, Painter, illustrator, typeface designer, and book designer. He came to the US from Bohemia, living first in Chicago where he took drawing lessons at Hull House and later becoming an apprentice wood engraver. From 1900 to 1902 he studied at the Chicago art institute, and in 1903 moved to New York. Ruzicka designed typefaces and wood engraving illustrations for Daniel Berkeley Updike's Merrymount Press, and was a designer for, and consultant to, the Mergenthaler Linotype Company for nearly fifty years. He designed a number of seals and medals, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and the Dartmouth Medal of the American Library Association. His work is the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Cleveland Museum of Art, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Library of Congress, Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Worcester Art Museum, and numerous university and public libraries.
