"The former schoolteacher strove successfully to make his correspondence detailed, polished, and interesting...Besides describing the exterior of military life, he revealed the inner effects of the Civil War upon a sensitive soldier, his increasing awareness of human weaknesses, his changing attitudes on politics and slavery, his growing callousness towards war's horror and cruelty. One editor wrote "Because of Reid's 'high order of intelligence and ability' his Civil war letters constituted 'a valuable record, well worthy of publication". 257 pp. including Index.
