'VICTORIAN PLYMOUTH: As Time Draws On' chronicles,in words and pictures, the development of what we know today as the City of Plymouth as it was in the 19thC - when it was a largely rural area encompassing the Three Towns and diverse villages and hamlets. From the pre-photographic era you will find well drawn scenes by on-the-spot artists depicting different aspects of life and society in the days when horse power ruled the roads. With a picture and a story on every page, here you can monitor the growth of the Three Towns, see the development of Devonport and the Dockyard, witness the rise in status of Stonehouse with its own Town Hall and plot the urban sprawl of Plymouth with its ever-expanding boundaries. The distinctly separate communities that made up Plympton and Plymstock are also represented as are those of Cattedown,Weston Mill,Oreston,Turnchapel and Mount Batten. There are fascinating accounts too of the building of Rennie's Breakwater,Brunel's Bridge and Douglass's Eddystone Lighthouse. In this, his third book on the area,Chris Robinson brings Victorian Plymouth to life and there can be no easier or more pleasant way to take yourself back in time and see the town and its surroundings as our Victorian forebears would have known it. Readers of his 'As Time Draws On' series (see rja402211 and rja402311) in the Evening Herald (a local newspaper) will be familiar with the bulk of the text and the pictures but perhaps not the maps, particularly the overlay maps of Plymouth City Centre, past and present, which show clearly where many of the buildings, depicted within the pages of this wonderful book, would have stood in relation to the modern street plan. Please contact seller, because of the heavier weight of this item, for correct shipping/P+p quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page! ** N.B.
