Cambridge: Riverside Press, 1892. Limited Edition. One of 250 numbered copies printed on Japan vellum, this being copy no.182. Two octavo volumes (20cm); publisher's vellum boards, with titling, decorations, and triple-ruled border stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; red silk endpapers; top edges gilt; viii,9-279,[3]; [9],10-287,[3]pp; with 18 aquatints after illustrations by Childe Hassam, Ross Turner, Rhoda Holmes Nicholls, and others. Mild wear to extremities, light dust-soil, with a small, stray ink mark to front joint of vol.2, and some scattered foxing to rear cover of same; Very Good+. Handsome edition of Howells's account of his years spent in Venice; he was given a position as consul there, his reward for having written a campaign biography of Abraham Lincoln in 1869. Though published simultaneously with the trade edition bound in cream cloth, the vellum-bound limited edition is considerably less common. BAL 9664.
