About This Item
Memorabilia of Henry George Couture from his time serving aboard U.S.S. Arkansas and U.S.S. Humphreys. Nearly 300 pages, most of which contain multiple items. This is a scrapbook kept by Couture's wife, the items tacked to leaves of complete(?) manuscript nautical scholar's record of Paul H. Tarpley. Most items are from 1934-1937. The important contents includes nearly 50 components from shipboard news, "ARKY NEWS", a mimeographed sheet. Sometimes only clips are present and sometimes complete issues. Other ship-specific items include a red, white & blue ribbon with USS ARK in gilt letters (corsage base); programs for Washington's 1935 birthday celebration and Smoker; and a Christmas 1934 celebration program. Three items relate to Puerto Rico; three items were issued in Naples (honoring Arkansas's arrival, but generic); an overlaid football schedule; a Norfolk Chamber of Commerce brochure on 1934 Practice Cruise; and a brochure on Coronation Review, 1937. A substantial portion of the scrapbook contains cartoons (some of which may offend modern race and gender sensibilities) from several sources & clips from Our Navy, a newsletter. Photographs of U.S.S. Humphries are included and one of a four-stack #236. There are many dozens of pictures of various U.S. Navy ships, from submarines to aircraft carriers. Some personal telegrams and non-sensitive ships' orders are included, such as the "King Neptune" celebration order. Some of the ephemera is loose, and the scrapbook itself is falling apart, but this is a fascinating archive of 1930's U.S. Navy life. This book is 8.5" wide by 14" tall and 3" thick. (50739) . Hardcover.

Terms of Sale
Books, Etc.
Items are 12mo. or 8vo or 4to. in original binding and in at least good condition unless otherwise noted. The dust jacket condition will be noted separately in the item description. Items are subject to prior sale, though we update our online inventory to remove sold books in a timely manner. Most books are posted with at least a picture of the cover, with other pictures of notable features or defects. Additional pictures of any item are available upon request. We strive to accurately and comprehensively describe the condition of each item for sale and will gladly provide further details if asked.
Standard shipping in the U.S. will go by USPS Media Rate; faster shipping will go by USPS Priority Mail. The shipping costs are based on most books weighing 2 - 4 pounds (1 - 2 kg). International shipping will cost more, unfortunately. Large, heavy books may require additional postage, but we will try to avoid this if we can.
If feasible, dust jackets will be placed in protective sleeves before shipping. If you don't like the protective sleeve, they are easy to remove without harming the dust jacket. We ship books protected by bubble wrap in carefully-taped boxes. For Priority Mail, we will usually box the book, then place the box inside a Priority Mail flat-rate envelope; most Priority Mail boxes are either too large or too small for individual books.
The "shipping times" are usually accurate, but delays can happen, as we have no influence on the national or international delivery industry! A tracking number for your package is available upon request. USPS Priority Mail shipping includes insurance.
All orders may be returned for any reason within 30 days of receipt.
