About This Item
Winchester, Hampshire: Waterside Press, 1998. VG+. First edition, first printing. Paperback. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, without dedication on half-title page. Signing reads, 'With best wishes/John Wroath/June 1999'. 142pp. 'In law a husband and wife are one: and that is the husband'. This was the law until well into the nineteenth century. This book is based on research into the the historical background to the modern day law concerning children. The result is an absorbing account of the origins of women's rights to their children and property in which the author recalls the brave efforts of Henrietta Greenhill and Caroline Norton which led to the Infant Custody Act 1839 and Matrimonial Causes Act 1857 - the rest being history. The story is fascinating for its connection with notable people of the time - included among them the prime minister Lord Melbourne, the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan and the author Mary Shelley. With List of Cases and Index. Spotting to top-edge and fore-edge, and half-title page; else a very good plus copy of a SCARCE first edition, first printing SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, JOHN WROATH..
