About This Item

London: Macmillan and Co., 1882. First edition. Leather. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A first edition two volume set which provides a fictional biography on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, particularly her captivity at the hands of her cousin Elizabeth I, written by Charlotte Mary Yonge and presented in a half-crushed morocco binding. First Edition. Complete two volume set in a half-crushed morocco binding on marbled boards. This is a lovely fictional reimagining of the life of Mary Stuart (1542-1587), also known as the Queen of Scots, focusing upon the events leading up to and following her captivity. Mary was considered the legitimate sovereign of England by many Catholics, and repeatedly claimed the throne as her own. Elizabeth I, perceiving Mary as a threat, had her imprisoned in various castles and manor houses in England for over eighteen years. Vol I includes contents such as 'The Little Waif', 'The Captive', 'The Oak and the Oaken Hall', and 'Cis or Sister'. Vol II includes contents such as 'A Tangle', 'The Love Token', 'A Lioness at Bay', and 'In the Web'. Written by Charlotte Mary Yonge (1823-1901), an English novelist who often 'wrote in the service of the church'. Her works helped to spread the influence of the Oxford Movement, which later became known as Anglo-Catholicism, and is mostly out of print today.Ink inscription to paste downs of both volumes which reads 'Sybil K. S. Knoxf--e from her ---- mother Mis. Knox---.'Collated, complete.  Bound in a half crushed-morocco binding on marbled boards. Externally, rubbing to the extremities and head and tail of spine, as well as along the top edge of boards. Fading and marks to boards. Spine is faded with more light wear along the joints. Ink inscription to front paste downs, with age-toning and a few spots to paste downs and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Good
