About This Item

No Place: United States Lines, Publisher, 1932. Pamphlet. Good. No place, 1932. Single sheet, folded into four pages, 9 by 6 inches. Thick paper stock. Illustration of a large sailing ship on the front cover. A luncheon menu issued to the passengers aboard the S.S. Leviathan, at that time a passenger ship owned by the United States Shipping Board and operated under their name, the United States Lines. The ship was initially built in Germany as a passenger ship, launching in 1913 as the SS Vaterland. The ship was the biggest of its class at the time and was outfitted with many electrical conveniences. When World War I broke out, the ship was in Hoboken, New Jersey, and was seized by the US, with the intention of using it as a troop transport. By the 1930s, when this menu was issued, the ship was running at a loss, and was soon destined to be sold as scrap. GOOD condition. Area of staining to the upper left corner and spine. Moderate general toning and soiling, with other small stains. Minor edgewear.
