World War I draft registration cards provide information on over twenty=four million men, 1917-1918, who were born between 1872 and 1900. These records help bridge the information gap caused by the loss of the 1890 census. They are invaluable in locating foreign-born ancestors. John J. Newman had over 40 years of genealogical experience. In addition he served as Director of Information Management Services for the Indiana Supreme Court. He was a noted family historian with a broad and deep understanding of public records. He earned a Master's Degree in History from Indiana University. He has lectured and published widely. This volume is divided into three sections. Part I is a study of the draft registration process designed to assist the researcher understand who registered at what time and the procedures involved. It analyses the information found n the registration cards, provides a strategy for evaluating the quality of the data provided, and discusses in detail those who registered, including aliens, Native Americans, African Americans, Chinese, Japanese and Mexicans. It offers a methodology to examine contemporary sources, such as newspapers, city directories and maps, to provide a strategy for locating ancestors. Part II provides statistics and the National Archives and Family History Library film numbers for every local draft board,incorporating the film breaks for divisions of names. The final section is a CD-ROM containing the National archives draft registration maps and sections of the published reports of the Provost Marshal General, giving local board numbers, their addresses, as well as other maps and research tools.
