Boston: Small, Maynard & Company, 1900. First Edition. First Printing. 12mo. (14.5cm); navy blue blind-embossed cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; decorative endpapers; top edge gilt; [8],[xi],xii-xx,145,[5]pp, with an engraved frontispiece portrait of Grant from an 1865 photograph by H.F. Warren. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to Brigadier General Isaac Jones Wistar (1827-1905) on the preliminary blank: "Isaac J. Wistar / from Owen Wister / Dec.24, 1900." Armorial bookplate to front pastedown, some trivial wear to extremities, else a fresh, very Near Fine. Sharp copy of Wister's contribution to the "Beacon Biographies of Eminent Americans" series, a short biographical treatment of Ulysses S. Grant. With a contemporary inscription to American author, lawyer, and Union Army General Isaac J. Wistar, who began his military career with the 71st Pennsylvania Infantry, and would go on to fight in the Battles of Ball's Bluff and Antietam. Scarce, especially inscribed.
