About This Item
1851. Ephemera. Signed by R.S., 'Sujles'
'A Tribute to the memory of a deceased friend who died of consumption July 10, 1851 aged twenty years...'
Oh can it be that thou arte gone
That thou art numbered with the dead
And must we lay thy lovely form
To slumber in the narrow bed.
Alas tis so. Deaths cruel hand
Hath struck the unrelenting blow
And severed the enduring tie
That bound thee to this world of woe.
And as I press (?) thy .... cold brow
Imprinting there the parting kiss
Thy happty spirit even now
Is soaring in a world of bliss.
Fond parents deeply mourne for thee
So dearly loved when heare below
A brothers heart is maid to feel
The keenest anguish earth can know.
Gently is sinks the setting sun
Calmly as falls (?) the parting say
Thy weary spirit took its flight
Unto the realms of endless day.
We laid thee gently down to rest
No more to meet thee here below
While are thy early resting place
Many a humbling tear will flow.
How sweetly now thy voice wil blend
With those of the redeemed on high
In singing songs of endless praise
In that bright world beyond the sky.
8 x 10", grey paper, original folds, ruffling on left edge not affecting text.
