NEW YORK NY: DUTTON (E.P.). NEAR FINE IN VERY GOOD+ D.J.. PUB 1940. FIRST EDITION. HARDCOVER. THE D.J. OF THIS COPY HAS "FOURTH PRINTING" AT THE TOP OF THE FRONT FLAP PRICE OF 2.50 AT BOTTOM . THERE IS VERY SLIGHT BARELY NOTICEABLE DISCOLORING OF THE CLOTH AT THE TOP OF THE REAR COVER. D.J. HAS A BIT OF WEAR AT CORNERS, A SHALLOW CHIP AT THE TOP OF A LIGHTLY FADED SPINE PANEL, A FEW SHORT TEARS WITH ASSOCIATED HORIZONTAL CREASES AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE FRONT PANEL, AND A VERY LIGHT STAIN AT THE TOP OF THE REAR PANEL. A VERY NICE CLEAN AND TIGHT COPY. IN 1974, Gale Research (in American Fiction, 1900-1950) identified Jesse Stuart as one of the forty-four novelists in the first half of the 20th century with high critical acclaim. Jesse Stuart was the second youngest of that group (William Saroyan was one year younger). Stuart was named poet laureate for the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1954, and in 1961 he received the annual award from the American Academy of Poets. .
