One of the most important books in the history of Western music, Rameau's "Traite de l'harmonie" was published in 1722 while he was still a rather obscure organist and music master at Clermont-Ferrand. It was immediately recognized as a profound advance in musical theory and was the first to codify tonality principle which were to dominate the music of the Wset for the next two centuries.
