About This Item

Dover Publications, 1971. Paperback. Fine/fine. Hardcover, lv+ 444 pp. Illustrated with musical examples and with a table of terms. Translated and with an introduction and notes by Philip Gossett. One of the most important books in the history of Western music, Rameau's "Traite de l'harmonie" was published in 1722 while he was still a rather obscure organist and music master at Clermont-Ferrand. It was immediately recognized as a profound advance in musical theory and was the first to codify tonality principle which were to dominate the music of the Wset for the next two centuries.
