About This Item

Baltimore, MD: American Silk Society, John D. Toy, Printer, 1840. 8vo. [2], 357, [1] pp., contiguously paginated, including index. Text woodcut illustrations, couple tables. Contemporary quarter-diced brown calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering on spine (occasional foxing, toning, some browning in middle issues), still a VG copy. First edition, thus, of this complete run for the second year of this pioneering American Silk Society magazine. Founded by Smith (1793-1867) in 1838, after not only inventing and promoting his “Improved Silk Reel” first introduced in 1830, but also publishing “A Treatise on the Culture of Silk” in 1830. This volume encompasses an extended treatise on dyeing silks, problems in raising the Mulberry leaves to feed the silkworms, as well as staving off disease, and other issues with silkworms. In addition, there are included foreign articles detailing silkworm raising efforts, and dyeing techniques, and Smith himself was a proponent of importing and selling the silkwrom caterpillars and their cocoons in the United States. Smith was also an early backer and friend of Audubon’s Birds of America, and was an expert on cicadas in the U.S. See: Sabin, 82674.
