Longman, Hurst, Rees,Orme, and Brown, 1817. Hardcover. Very Good. Third British edition. Three volumes 8vo, contemporary calf gilt, dark brown morocco lettering pieces gilt, page edges marbled, Vol. II without half title, five engraved maps, plus the large folding map frontis. Very shallow chipping to the foredges of the boards, rear board of Vol. II detaching, the text blocks are quite fresh, p.o. bookplates. A few tears to the folding map with cellotape repairs verso not affecting the image. This map is widely considered to be one of the most important maps of the United States. According to Wheat, this map is 'one of the most influential ever drawn . . . This was a great map, a milestone of mapping in its time . . .'
