About This Item

Doughty's masterpiece was first published in 1888, "an unrivalled encyclopaedia of knowledge about all aspects of nineteenth-century and earlier Arabia" (ODNB). Lawrence was instrumental in getting the second English edition published and his introduction first appeared in that edition of 1921. Two volumes, large octavo. Original brown cloth, gilt-lettered spines, top edges brown, others untrimmed. With dust jackets. Half-tone portrait frontispiece of Doughty, 8 plates and illustrations throughout, 2 folding coloured maps showing Doughty's routes; title pages printed in red and black. Touch of sunning to head of spines, slight creasing to fore corners of vol. II title page due to a production fault; jackets lightly soiled, some nicks, chips and closed tears with some loss, old stain to front panel of vol. II; very good copies in used but presentable jackets. O'Brien A017.
