Philadelphia, 1836.. Two volumes. 207,8; 196pp. Early 20th-century three-quarter red morocco and marbled boards, spines gilt with raised bands, t.e.g. Minor edge and corner wear. Half title and titlepage detached but laid in to in first volume. Leaves rather browned and somewhat brittle, occasional closed marginal tears, scattered worming to first volume, touching a letter here and there. Overall a good set. An interesting collection of anecdotes and accounts concerning Indian customs. Inspired by the myth of the "Vanishing Indian," Turner states in his introduction that he sought to record for posterity the traits of Native Americans before their complete extinction. Includes a brief account of George Catlin's experiences and Indian portraits. Contains descriptions of Mandans, Chippewas, Osages, Indians of California, Pawnees, Senecas, Towea, Natches, and other tribes. HOWES T423. FIELD 1580. SABIN 97483.
