"In 1971 Jack D. Rittenhouse published his celebrated THE SANTA FE TRAIL, A HISTORICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY, to help commemorate the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Trail by William Becknell in 1821. To place his bibliography in perspective, Rittenhouse included a concise and well-crafted introduction representing a summary history of the Trail.
