The author, a Scottish farmer from East Lothian, crossed Lake Michigan directly from Canada to Detroit on his way to Chicago, then a hamlet of 150 wooden houses. "Four chapters of the 'Tour' are devoted to an account of travels in northern and central Illinois and from St. Louis to Cincinnati by the rivers.
