"Shirreff was a level-headed British farmer who was both a good judge of people and of land." Graff. "Four chapters of the 'Tour' are devoted to an account of travels in northern and central Illinois and from St. Louis to Cincinnati by the rivers. The 'View' contains, besides general matter, three chapters descriptive of Illinois, with special attention to agricultural conditions. Shirreff seems to have been a careful observer and his book is of considerable value." Buck.
