Patrick Shirreff (1791-1876) embarked on an agricultural tour of Upper and Lower Canada and the U.S. before allowing a younger brother to emigrate from their native Scotland. Back home, Shirreff was a pioneer of cereal hybridisation and was noted for producing several new varieties of oats and wheat. He settles on Illinois as a preferred place for settlement, Upper Canada being "an interminable forest."
