About This Item
Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd, 1835. Hardcover. Good. v, 322, [2], 331-473 p. 23 cm. Original publisher's binding. Bumped corners, some dents to edges, hinges cracking. Foxing to first and last pages, tears in pp. 269-71.
Patrick Shirreff (1791-1876) embarked on an agricultural tour of Upper and Lower Canada and the U.S. before allowing a younger brother to emigrate from their native Scotland. Back home, Shirreff was a pioneer of cereal hybridisation and was noted for producing several new varieties of oats and wheat. He seems to settle on Illinois as a preferred place for settlement, Upper Canada being "an interminable forest."
