About This Item
College Station, TX: Texas A & M University Press , 1995 Texas A & M University Press, College Station, TX. 1995. Hardcover. Stated First Edition. Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for a blank bookplate on the FFFP. Book Condition: Fine. DJ: Fine. Black cloth boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine. 265 pp 8vo. Everyone knew that the US was unprepared for war when it came in 1942, but the situation at Galveston showed how far the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard was behind the German Navy and its U-Boats. In this time frame, 24 U-Boats entered the Gulf of Mexico and attacked American and Allied merchant ships sinking 56 and damaging 14 more. By late 1943 the US and allied forces using air escort and convoy operations managed to quell the threat and force the U-Boat fleets to retreat to European shores. A clean near pristine copy.
