About This Item

Philadelphia: Board of Foreign Missions, Reformed Church in the United States, 1918. First Edition. Octavo (18.5cm); blue cloth, stamped in gilt; 292pp, frontis., 36 plates, 2 fold-out maps. Spine and portion of rear panel sunned; dampstains and light soiling; leading corners bumped. Textblock top edge stained blue, faded; damping and toning throughout; pastedowns wrinkled. Else, Very Good.

The Tohoku (Northeastern) region of Japan contains Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi, and Yamagata prefectures. Rev. Christopher Noss, author of this book and missionary for the Reformed Church, refers to it as "the Scotland of Japan", on account of its relative geographic location and the unique dialect and attitudes of its inhabitants. This book presents an account—from the American missionary perspective—on Tohoku life and culture, while emphasizing the mission's efforts to install Christianity throughout the region. With b/w photo-illustrated plates and two fold-out maps of Japan.
