This work on bells and their religious and secular uses by Girolamo Maggi (c. 1523 - 1572) was first published in Hanau in 1608. This is the second edition with notes by François Sweerts (1567-1629). It describes the invention of the bell and discusses bells in public and private spaces, towers with bells like the Turis Garisenda and the tower of Pisa - illustrated. But he also talks about the use of bells with animals - also illustrated with an elephant wearing a bell. And of course he illustrates a carrilon.
