Boston: Estes & Lauriat, 1892. Second Edition. [7x9.25"]; Forest green cloth covers with silver gilt lettering on spine and front, stamped illustration in black ink on spine and on front of forest scene and insert circle of canoe and cabin, light green geometric patterned endpapers, all edges trimmed; xiv, 415 pp., frontispiece illustration of Capt. Farrar, over 300 illustrations and images throughout text; Some shelf wear with bumped and weaken corners, top and bottom of spine worn, rubbing to surface of covers, reinforced hinges at endpapers however hinges cracked at title page and after rear free endpaper. Overall condition is Very Good. Capt. Charles Alden John Farrar (1842-1893) was a wilderness writer and adventurer in Maine and New Hampshire in the late 1800's. From an article by William Krohn, "For much of his adult life, Farrar spent his winters in Massachusetts, tending to his printing business, writing books, and creating maps and other products that promoted tourism. In the summer, he lived in the lower Rangeley Lakes where he ran a transportation business consisting of horses and carriages, steamboats, and hotels."

This book was his last and "... cost him nearly $10,000 to produce and ... was the capstone to Farrar's publishing career.".
