They included books from Jefferson's own library ( among them his copy of THE FEDERALIST ) , major works by him ( NOTES ON VIRGINIA ) , and a collection of letters given to the Library by Herbert R. Strauss . Illustrated by additional materials from the Library's collections . The cover features Rembrandt Peale's portrait of Jefferson painted in 1800 .
