Limited to 1000 copies of which this is number 171. In 1830 there was published anonymously in Boston a small volume entitle "Tales of the Northwest," a thick duodecimo which chronicled with authenticity the life of the Indian, as the author had experienced it, in the Mississippi Valley. It was the first collections of short tales published in the Untied States but also as the first literary treatment of the territory lying at the headwaters of the Mississippi. This marked the earliest appearance in American literature of the plains Indians who once claimed as their heritage eternal right to roam over the land that now comprises the stares of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and the two Dakotas. Condition: Spine ends and corners rubbed, corners bumped. edge wear. Pictorial front cover else a good to very good copy.
