A VERY HANDSOME COPY IN A DE-LUXE PUBLISHER'S BINDING

first edition, American issue folio (35.5 x 27 cm.) xiv, 487pp., 90 plates of wood-engraved illustrations, numerous large wood-engraved illustrations throughout, publisher's deep brown morocco backed brown cloth (imitating morocco), deep and elaborate border blocked on front cover in gilt and on rear cover in blind, central panel of front cover with 'Switzerland Illustrated' blocked in gilt in large and very elaborate lettering, spine titled and with large pictorial design of a mountain blocked in gilt, all edges gilt, title page lightly foxed, else a particularly nice clean firm copy. Uncommon in the de-luxe binding and rare in this condition.

This is a reissue of the London edition published by Bickers & Son in 1878. These are the London printed sheets with a New York title page.


A rather splendid work with fine illustrations which are from drawings, paintings by Bauernfeind, Braith, Calame, Dill, Disen, Eckenbrecher, Franz, Grob, Haberlin, Herdtle, Hertel, Heyn, Jungheim, Kindler, Kroner, Meyer, Meyerheim, Riefstahl, Ritz, Roux, Schmid, Schrodter, Spect, Vautier, Zugel which depict landscapes, views, street scenes, people, activities, buildings, etc. The accompanying text gives a full description of the mountains, alpine roads and passes, lakes, forests in all parts of the country as well a the towns and cities.
This fine book by the German writer Woldemar Kaden (1838-1907) (sometimes given in English as Raden) was first published in German as Das Schweizerland: eine Sommerfahrt durch Gebirg und Thal. Woldemar Kaden; mit Bildern von G. Bauernfeind; Holzschnitte von A. Closs (Stuttgart: 1875-76).
