About This Item

London: Edward Arnold & Co., 1948 . First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 9" by 5.5". None. Two volumes of this interesting literary critique of English literature of the mid nineteenth century. Early edition of A Survey of English Literature 1830-1880 by Oliver Elton in the original publisher's cloth binding and scarce unclipped dust wrappers. This is the 1948 reprint, first published in 1920. An interesting overview and critique of English literature in the Victorian age, including Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, Tennyson, Dickens, Thackeray, George Eliot, and more. Includes notes and an index. Elton was an English literary scholar, best known for his six volume 'A Survey of English Literature 1730-1880).  In the original publisher's cloth bindings and unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, very smart. There is some wear to the extremities of the dust wrappers, including some small creases and a few minor tears, and light age toning. To the binding, there is some minor bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. There is spotting to the fore edges. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with some light spotting throughout. Near Fine
