Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1886. 8vo size deep maroon clothbound hardcover with gilt titles on spine. Book has olive green endpapers; 283 pages followed by a 13 page catalogue of the publisher's other titles. Richard Grant White (1822 - 1885) was a prominent Shakespearean scholar and literary critic. He wrote multiple books on Shakespeare, and edited a 12 volume edition of Shakespeare. White was the father of architect Stanford White. Provenance: the bookplate inside front cover is: William Roscoe Thayer. Thayer (1859 - 1923) was a historian, editor and author of more than 18 books, most historical or literary. Bookplate inside front cover detailed above. Book has damage to covers apparently from insects, water damage to lower corner of front cover and a water stain in the margin of up to page 94. One signature from pages 69 to 92 is separated from the book and laid it. It also appears to have some insect damage in the top margin. Back cover also has water damage to edge side. Head and heel of spine and corners are bumped. Both front and back pastedowns are cracked. Pages are tanned. Small tacky area on fep where sticker was removed.. Cloth. Acceptable/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
